CH&CO’s apprentice chefs stand out from the crowd

30th January 2020

Two talented apprentices from CH&CO Workplaces have been shortlisted for the Purple Umbrella Awards 2020. The achievements of Jennifer Gomez Calle and Ben Garnett-Sinclair have been recognised in the Best Chef Apprentice Level 2 and Best Chef Apprentice Level 3 categories, respectively.

The Purple Umbrella Awards is Umbrella Training’s Apprentice of the Year Award and celebrates the success of the rising stars of the hospitality industry. It recognises apprentices that have really stood out during their time within their apprenticeship with Umbrella Training.  They may have achieved some fantastic feats in their work or have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment that really added value to a company’s workforce or production.

Jennifer has been praised for her great attitude and talent that has flourished throughout her apprenticeship, along with her confidence. With a real passion for food, she gives 100% in everything she does, putting ideas forward and supporting the team to ensure she has positive impact in every section of the kitchen.

Ben was CH&CO’s first apprentice chef in 2013 and has never failed to impress. In fact, his talents were recognised in 2014 and 2017 by the Craft Guild of Chefs when he was awarded the Apprentice Chef award and then the Young Chef of the Year award. Today, he is an accomplished sous chef with a continued desire to challenge himself and learn new skills and has enrolled on his second apprenticeship to study kitchen management and finance. Ben is an inspiring young man who impresses colleagues, clients, customers and the apprentices he mentors with his knowledge, skill and technical ability.

Steve Oram, Culinary Learning & Development Chef, said: “Huge congratulations to Jennifer and Ben. They’ve both shown real commitment, talent and flair throughout their apprenticeships and this recognition is so deserved. They are great ambassadors for CH&CO’s apprentice chefs and we’re very proud of them both and all that they have achieved to date. Jennifer and Ben are ambitious young chefs who undoubtedly have exciting, successful careers ahead of them. We wish them the very best of luck at the Purple Umbrella Awards dinner in March.”

The winners of the Purple Umbrella Awards 2020 will be announced at a Gatsby-themed dinner at The Savoy, London, on Friday 6 March.
