At CH&CO we are dedicated to sourcing shell eggs and egg products responsibly.

We use shell eggs as ingredients in our catering activities and sell egg products across our destinations. We source a total of approximately 5 million eggs a year across our sites, from a range of suppliers.
Developing our responsible network of suppliers is a priority for CH&CO and we are taking steps to ensure we continue to limit our impact.

All our eggs and egg products must meet the following criteria:

  • Be farmed cage-free, and without multi-tier systems
  • Be farmed without beak treating/trimming
  • Be farmed with responsible use of animal medicines
  • Be produced under the British Lion scheme if from Great Britain

At CH&CO we are striving to increase our percentage of responsibly sourced eggs. In 2020 we announced our commitment to purchasing 100% cage-free shell eggs and egg products by 2025.

Animal Welfare

We recognise the importance of animal welfare when sourcing ingredients (as reflected in our Sourcing Policy) which requires all suppliers of poultry products to procure material produced from livestock reared in accordance with the Five Freedoms:

  1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst - by providing ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour
  2. Freedom from Discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area
  3. Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease - by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment
  4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind
  5. Freedom from Fear and Distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental and suffering

Our Suppliers

At CH&CO we are continually improving our supply chain to ensure that all our suppliers abide by our values. Our suppliers undergo an audit process to ensure that they run cage-free processes. We work with our suppliers to ensure any change of requirements are met, but diverge if no effective changes are made.
